Surprise Proposal at Empire Bluff Trail

There’s something special about starting your day knowing you’re about to witness a life-changing “yes.” I headed up to hike up Empire Bluff Trail, one of the most breathtaking spots in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I had a special mission: to capture a surprise proposal with Lake Michigan as the stunning backdrop.

I arrived about 15 minutes before the couple to scout out the perfect location, somewhere with enough space for them to stand comfortably while I could stay tucked away, hidden just enough to catch the moment without being seen. The weather was classic mid-summer Michigan: hot, humid, and a little windy. Still, nothing could take away from the beauty of this place or the magic of the moment.

When the couple arrived, they made their way to the overlook. With the lake stretching endlessly behind them, he got down on one knee and she said yes! Her reaction was pure joy and complete surprise. It was one of those unforgettable moments that remind me why I love being part of these milestone memories.

Afterward, we spent some time capturing engagement photos along the trail. The couple was incredibly sweet, and full of excitement. We laughed, wandered a bit, and soaked in the panoramic views that make Empire Bluff one of the most iconic trails in Michigan.

I hadn’t hiked Empire Bluff in a while, and this morning reminded me just how special it is. Of all the trails in Sleeping Bear, this one might have the best views, though I know that’s a bold statement in a place known for its stunning landscapes.

On the hike back down, I had a few peaceful moments to myself in the quiet of the trees, reflecting on the beauty of the morning and the joy of being able to document such an important life event.

If you're planning a proposal in Northern Michigan or are looking for the perfect place for adventure engagement photos, Empire Bluff Trail is an incredible choice. Between the views, the hike, and the intimate feel of the trail, it’s the kind of place that makes memories last forever.
