Capturing Vacation Memories at Christmas Cove

There’s something magical about a quiet, windswept beach at sunrise, especially when it's shared with a sweet family making vacation memories in Northern Michigan.

This morning, I had the joy of photographing the Toscano family at Christmas Cove, a beautiful little beach tucked away in Northport, Michigan. Though it was a surprisingly chilly and windy morning for late May, everyone powered through like pros. The kids were bundled up and a bit cold to start, but with some cozy snuggles, a few snacks, and lots of love, we got some truly heartwarming photos.

This was my first time shooting at Christmas Cove, and it won’t be my last. The beach is such a gem, with a soft sandy shoreline, peaceful vibes, and a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, make it the perfect setting for sunrise or sunset family sessions.

The Toscano family was visiting from out of town on vacation, and their energy was so fun and genuine. The kids lit up when we chatted about Lightning McQueen, Monster Jam, Megalodon, and all things. We even played a bit of the Cars soundtrack during the session, which the kids enjoyed.

They also brought along their sweet dog, who wasted no time diving into the lake for a quick swim. It was a moment of pure joy. We spent the rest of the session running races on the beach, tossing rocks into the water, and snuggling up to stay warm. One of the kiddos spent most of the morning nestled close to Dad, soaking in the warmth and love.

Even though it was only around 40°F, the cold didn't stop us from having a great time. These are the kinds of sessions that stick with me—the ones where families lean into the moment, weather and all, and simply enjoy being together.

If you’re visiting Leelanau County and looking for a peaceful, scenic beach for your family session, Christmas Cove in Northport is a new favorite I’ll be recommending again and again.
